Dear sponsor,

This is caseworker Oksana is writing to you because Bohdan is only 4 years old and doesn’t know how to write yet. Bohdan and his family live in a village far from the city. His father divorced his mother a long time ago and left the family. Bohdan’s mother had a second husband, but he went to war and went missing. The mother’s name is Mariia, and she lives with her son and daughter in the countryside and works on a pig farm. Bohdan has a sister, Andriana, and he likes to play with her. She takes care of him and spends most of her time with him. His best friend is a boy from the village, Luka, and they go for walks together and play soccer. At Christmas, he goes caroling if he can, and his mother cooks kutia and pampushky. Bohdan doesn’t go to school yet. His favorite foods are fried potatoes, pasta with milk, and sweets. He eats whatever his grandmother cooks: soup, potatoes, and pasta. In his free time, he likes to be outside doing something, watching, and running. Bohdan does not know yet what he will be like when he grows up, because he is still small and cannot say. Dear sponsor, I will be grateful to you if you support this boy. He has a dream to have friends, maybe you will become a good friend in his life, and he will be very happy.

Caseworker Comments:

Bohdan, a tender child, finds comfort in the warmth of his family, particularly his beloved grandmother. Shy and introverted, he treasures moments spent in the comfort of their embrace. Building a connection with him takes time, as he guards his heart with reservation, cherishing his moments of solitude.

Despite his quiet demeanor, Bohdan’s love for his grandmother shines through in his actions. He eagerly assists her with household chores, finding joy in the simple tasks of tidying his toys, washing dishes, and making his bed. Animals hold a special place in his heart, particularly cats and dogs, offering him companionship and solace in their presence.

In the quaint village they call home, Bohdan and his family face adversities that weigh heavily on them. His mother, Mariia, grapples with the uncertainty of her husband’s whereabouts, turning to alcohol as a means of coping with her overwhelming emotions. This tumultuous environment leaves Bohdan and his sister seeking refuge outdoors, escaping the chaos within their home.

Yet, in the darkness, glimmers of hope emerge. A religious family extends a helping hand, offering support and companionship in their darkest hours. Mariia, despite her struggles, reveals her tender heart, yearning for a brighter future for her children.

However, the road ahead is troubled with challenges. Financial instability grips the family, leaving them feeling abandoned and devoid of worth. Their dilapidated house, ravaged by time and neglect, stands as a testament to their difficulty. With no electricity or gas, and sanitary conditions deteriorating, the children endure unimaginable hardships within the confines of their home.

The strain of poverty casts a shadow over the family’s relationships, particularly between Mariia and her children. Yet, within the struggle, they find solace in the unwavering love of their grandmother, who stands as a beacon of hope in their darkest hour.

As they navigate the treacherous waters of adversity, Bohdan and his family cling to the hope of a brighter tomorrow. Bohdan and his family are in urgent need of your support.
