My name is Demian, and I am 9 years old. I am in the 4th grade and live in a village. Before the war, my family lived in another region, but we had to leave our home and start over. I live with my mom, dad, and two brothers.
My older brother, Denys, is a soldier in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and is currently a prisoner of war. We miss him very much and pray every day that God will bring him home safely. My mom works at a school and has been struggling with health issues, so we do our best to help and care for her. My dad is a driver who transports supplies for military needs.
Our family loves animals and often takes in homeless or injured ones. We have dogs, cats, parrots, and even a guinea pig. In my free time, I enjoy making things from wood, stones, and other materials, and I love building with construction sets.

Demian is a bright, kind-hearted 10-year-old boy who is currently in the 4th grade. Those who know him describe him as clever, thoughtful, calm, and friendly. Despite the many hardships his family has faced, Demian continues to approach life with a positive attitude and a caring spirit. He is always willing to help his mother around the house, whether that means washing dishes, cleaning, carrying firewood, or running errands. In his free time, he enjoys collecting natural materials, creating crafts from wood and stones, and building imaginative projects with his hands. Demian has a gentle nature and a maturity beyond his years that is truly remarkable.
The challenges facing Demian’s family began when war changed their lives forever. In 2023, a missile destroyed their home in their region, forcing the family to flee and start over in another region. Today, they live in a rented portion of an old village house because it is the most affordable option they can find. Although they are grateful to have a place to stay, the housing conditions are far from ideal and make daily life difficult.
The family consists of Demian, his mother, stepfather, and two older brothers. His biological father is not involved in his life. His stepfather works as a driver and does everything he can to provide for the family, but his income is often not enough to cover all their needs. Demian’s mother worked as a teacher’s assistant, but her health has recently declined significantly. Following the discovery of a stomach tumor and a breast tumor, she has undergone surgery and continues treatment and recovery. Her medical condition has limited her ability to work, creating even greater financial strain on the family.
Adding to their burden is the heartbreaking situation involving Demian’s oldest brother, Denys. While serving in an assault brigade defending Ukraine, Denys was taken prisoner in November 2025. Since then, the family has had little information about his condition or future. This uncertainty weighs heavily on everyone, especially Demian’s mother, who carries the pain of not knowing when or if her son will return home.
The family’s living conditions reflect their difficult circumstances. The old brick house they rent is poorly insulated and extremely cold during the winter months. The wood stove provides the main source of heat, while the kitchen and bathroom remain unheated. A broken sewage system means the indoor toilet cannot be used, forcing the family to rely on an outdoor outhouse. Parts of the ceiling and walls are deteriorating, and ongoing repairs are beyond the family’s financial means.
Yet despite all these challenges, there is still hope within this family. We have seen their resilience, determination, and faith. Demian continues to work hard in school, help his family, and find joy in simple things. His mother continues to fight for her health, and his stepfather works tirelessly to provide for those he loves.
