Orysia is a delightful little girl with sparkling blue eyes, a radiant smile, and a joyful spirit that brightens every room she enters. Warm-hearted and affectionate, she loves welcoming visitors and eagerly shares whatever she has, no matter how little. Orysia enjoys playing with her dolls, exploring the world around her, and spending time with her family. Though she is only a toddler, her gentle nature and cheerful personality bring comfort and happiness to those who know her.
Behind Orysia’s beautiful smile, however, is a story of significant hardship.
Orysia lives with her mother, Khrystyna, her older sister, and her baby brother in rural Ukraine. Khrystyna is a devoted single mother who is raising her three children alone. The fathers of the children are no longer involved in their lives, leaving her with the overwhelming responsibility of providing for and caring for her family without support.
Over the years, Khrystyna has faced one challenge after another. For a time, she and her daughters lived in an old house inherited from her grandmother. When Khrystyna became pregnant with her youngest child, her grandmother invited the family to move into a warmer and safer home. Tragically, shortly afterward, her grandmother passed away. Once again, Khrystyna found herself carrying the full weight of her family’s future alone.
Today, the family lives in extremely difficult conditions. Their home lacks many basic necessities that most families take for granted. There is no indoor bathroom or toilet, and water must be carried from a well outside, regardless of the weather. During the cold winter months, the family depends on a wood-burning stove for heat, yet they often cannot afford enough firewood to keep the house warm. Many mornings the children wake up in a cold home, and frequent illnesses are a constant concern.
Despite these hardships, Khrystyna works tirelessly to create a loving environment for her children. She does everything within her power to ensure they feel safe, cared for, and cherished. She keeps the home as neat as possible, stretches every available resource, and sacrifices her own needs so her children can have what little is available.
The family’s greatest struggles involve meeting their most basic needs: food, warmth, clothing, and safe living conditions. The lack of adequate heating, hot water, and proper sanitation places additional stress on daily life. What may seem like simple necessities can feel completely out of reach for this family.
Yet through it all, Orysia remains a happy, hopeful child. She continues to laugh, play, and dream, unaware of how much her mother sacrifices each day to care for her family. Her resilience is remarkable, and her smile is a reminder that even in hardship, hope can flourish.
